Kilimanjaro Machame Route
Because this route gives the best chances of reaching the summit, the Spiff Mountaineering team will follow this path, which will include an extra night at the Shira hut.
The Machame-Mweka combination Route is
the most scenic route on the mountain, passing through Kili's
complete range of landscape and vegetation types.
The ascent is longer and more gradual than the Umbwe Route
and, because of the extra time (and expense) required, it is usually
quieter than the Marangu Route. Trekkers on this route normally
reach Uhuru Peak. The huts along the way are in poor condition,
so a good tent is required. A trek on this route usually takes six
days (five nights) although an extra night on the ascent
(ideally at Shira Hut) is recommended to help acclimatization.
Treks on this route usually descend by either the Mweka
or the Marangu Route.
